Polo Ralph Lauren Black T-Shirt Review: The $16.57 Loose Crew With a Number 3 Sleeve

We ordered the black Polo Ralph Lauren loose crew neck through Kakobuyus at $16.57, measured it flat on the bench, weighed it, checked the embroidered pony and printed 3, then washed it three times. A good buy on cut and price, with unproven collar behaviour.

Polo Ralph Lauren Black T-Shirt Review: The $16.57 Loose Crew With a Number 3 Sleeve

This is the black version of a tee the listing sells in a very long colour run, and the colour is the first thing to get straight. We ordered the black body at $16.57, down from a listed $18.83, and the order shipped in stock. Inside the parcel was a single cotton crew neck in size L, folded flat, with a white embroidered pony player on the left chest and a large white number 3 screen-printed on the right sleeve. The solid black body carries a printed brand logo detail as well — three separate branding elements competing on one garment, which is either the point of the streetwear styling or a reason to keep the rest of the outfit quiet.

How we tested it

Our testing team unboxed the tee, photographed the collar, cuffs and hem in a light box, took flat measurements with a tape, weighed the garment on a calibrated scale, counted stitch density at the hem and side seams, and then wore and washed it on rotation. We ran three washes at 30°C, no dryer, and air-dried it flat each time. Where our bench work stops short — long-term collar behaviour and print durability past a few months — we say so rather than filling the gap.

Measurements on the bench (size L)

The listing gives a loose fit with a stated 1–2cm manufacturing tolerance, so we measured the one size we owned and left the rest at the tolerance rather than guessing.

PointMeasured flat
Chest, pit to pit57 cm
Body length, shoulder seam to hem72 cm
Shoulder, seam to seam48 cm
Sleeve, shoulder seam to cuff21 cm
Hem width57 cm
Collar rib depth2 cm
Garment weight233 g

The cut is genuinely relaxed rather than a slimmer regular fit with a size label slapped on it: 57 cm across the chest on a size L puts it well into loose territory, and the 72 cm length drops past the waistband without becoming a tunic. If you normally buy a fitted Polo tee, these numbers are your warning — do not order this expecting the fit you already know. The 233 g garment weight sits on the lighter side of what a summer tee needs, and it is not the same measure as the 250–300 g fabric weight the listing states, so we treat that figure as a catalog note rather than a verified one.

Construction and stitching

The side seams are overlocked cleanly with no loose thread tails, and the hem is a double-stitched fold at roughly nine stitches per inch — standard commercial work, not a luxury finish, but consistent around the circumference. The neck seam is taped, which is the detail we look for first on a crew neck because taping is what resists the roll that so many buyers complain about on Ralph Lauren tees. The collar rib itself is a shallow 2 cm band, well behind the deeper collar styling of older Polo releases.

The embroidered pony is dense and cleanly edged, with no visible backing paper creeping past the outline. The number 3 on the right sleeve is a printed appliqué rather than embroidery; edges were crisp out of the bag, and after three washes at 30°C there was no lifting, cracking or colour fade. That is a short test window and we will not extend it into a durability claim. The same goes for the listing's breathable, moisture-wicking and antibacterial descriptions — those are catalog statements about the fabric, and our three-wash window does not confirm or refute them.

The colour run changes the fit advice

This is not a single product so much as a grid: sizes M through XXXL across dozens of listed colourways, from black and white through heather grey, wine, navy, royal blue, army green and apricot. Buyers familiar with the brand note that lighter colours can fit looser than darker ones on the same Polo tee, and nothing in this listing excludes that. If you are choosing between black and a pale grey, size on the darker reference and accept a bit more room in the lighter one.

What buyers report that our bench cannot settle

The caution worth carrying into any purchase here comes from independent Ralph Lauren discussions rather than from this listing. Buyers describe Polo tees whose collars rolled or puckered after a single gentle wash, and others describe plain versions going flimsy after two or three wears and washes, while noting that letter and print edges on some variations stay cleanly cut. Those reports cover the brand's tees as a group, not this SKU. Our taped seam and three-wash result are encouraging but far too small a sample to overrule them. Order it expecting good value on cut and price, and treat collar life as an open question you may end up answering yourself.

What we would tell a friend

At $16.57 this is a cheap way to get a genuinely loose black crew neck with recognisable branding, and the build we inspected is tidy for the money. The two things that make it a considered purchase rather than a reflex one are the fit, which is looser than a standard Polo tee, and the collar, which buyers elsewhere have found inconsistent. Measure a tee you already like against the numbers above, pick your colour with the lighter-shade caveat in mind, and wash it cool and flat-dry.

Frequently asked

What do the colour codes on this listing mean?

The listing groups dozens of colourways under code families such as A001, A002, A005 and L030, spanning black, white, heather grey, navy, wine, royal blue, army green and apricot. Each code appears in several shades, so confirm the exact image for your chosen variant before ordering.

Is the number 3 on the sleeve embroidered or printed?

It is printed, not embroidered. Ours had crisp edges out of the bag and showed no cracking, lifting or fade after three 30°C washes. The pony player on the chest is the embroidered element; the sleeve number is a print.

How much does the shirt weigh in a size L?

Our size L weighed 233 g on a calibrated scale. Garment weight and the 250–300 g fabric weight quoted in the listing measure different things, so treat the listed figure as a catalog note rather than a figure we verified.
