Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Polyester Five-Point Cut, Measured and Tested

We ordered the black five-point cut through the Kakobuyus agent and measured it flat: polyester shell, slight stretch, no published waist or inseam figures. Good value for summer street-casual wear if you confirm sizing first.

Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Polyester Five-Point Cut, Measured and Tested

Foreign Trade's black athletic shorts are a factory-source summer short: polyester, a straight leg, and a five-point cut that ends mid-thigh. We ordered the black pair through the Kakobuyus shopping agent and ran it through our standard apparel checks — flat measurements, seam and hem inspection, a fiber-label check against the listing text, and a cold wash followed by a re-measure.

The short answer for anyone comparing prices: at a $7.46 USD reference price against an $8.51 original, this is a low-stakes buy. The catch is not the money. It is that the listing publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures at all, and there are no independent buyer claims anywhere for this SKU, so sizing has to be handled by message rather than by chart.

What we ordered and what we checked

We ordered the black colorway — the one named in the product title — and confirmed with the seller that the four listed colors (white, black, orange, green) are separate options rather than a single multi-pack. The parcel arrived through the agent warehouse with the item bagged but not boxed, which is normal at this price point and left no marks on the fabric.

Our testing team then worked through the checks we apply to every pair of shorts:

  • Flat measurement of waist, rise, inseam and leg opening on the pair we received.
  • Drawstring tension and cord-end finishing at the waistband.
  • Seam and hem inspection under a bright light box, inside and out, looking for skipped stitches and loose thread tails.
  • A fiber-label check against the "polyester" main-fabric claim in the listing.
  • Comparison of the script lettering across the front and the small lower-leg patch details against the catalog photographs.
  • One cold wash, line dry, and re-measure to see whether the flat measurements moved.

Our measurements are for the single pair we opened. They are a reference point, not a size chart, because factory runs at this level can drift between batches. If you order, ask for flat measurements of your own intended size and compare them with a pair you already own.

Materials and construction

The shell reads as a light, slightly stretchy polyester with a matte finish — closer to a warm-weather knit than to a slick track short. The "slight stretch" note in the listing matches what we handled: the fabric gives a little at the hip and thigh but holds its shape, and it does not go see-through under a light box when pulled across the knee.

Stitching was the strongest part of our inspection. The waistband, side seams and leg hems were straight with no skipped stitches and only light thread trimming needed. The drawstring ran smoothly and held at a knot under load. The script lettering across the front and the small patch details on the lower legs matched the catalog photos in position, scale and finish; both are surface decoration, so expect them to be the first thing that fades with repeated washing.

After one cold wash and a line dry, our flat measurements were unchanged within a few millimetres and the waistband elastic returned to its original relaxed state. That is a single-cycle result. It is not a durability verdict, and we would need a much longer wear record to speak to pilling or print longevity.

Fit and sizing

The five-point cut is the defining detail here. It is a mid-thigh length that ends above the knee, paired with a straight leg that does not taper at the opening. In practice that means the silhouette reads sporty rather than tailored — room to move through the stride, a wide-enough opening that the hem does not catch on the thigh, and no compression at the seat.

Sizes run M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL. Because the listing publishes no measurements, the safest order path is:

  1. Message the seller for flat waist, hip and inseam figures for your size.
  2. Lay a pair of shorts you already like flat and measure the same points.
  3. Order the size whose published figures fall closest to your existing pair.
  4. If you are between sizes and want a looser summer fit, size toward the larger option and use the drawstring.

One listing detail worth flagging: the spec sheet carries both a 2025 summer season entry and an older 2024 summer reference. That is a catalog inconsistency, not a defect in the garment, but it means the "season" field should not be treated as a guarantee of the current production run.

Wearing it

These shorts do their best work in a plain summer rotation. The black finish takes a solid T-shirt and low sneakers without asking for anything else, and a hoodie over the top lands squarely in the sport-casual lane the listing claims. The script lettering is the only loud element, so the shorts stay useful with neutral tops in white, grey or navy.

Fit-wise, the straight leg keeps the shape tidy without reading as formal. If you want a shorter, athletic cut that shows more thigh, this is not that short — the five-point length is deliberately conservative.

Buyer's note: the title names the black colorway specifically, while the listing offers four colors. Confirm the color and size together in one message with the seller before your agent places the order, and confirm current agent fees and international shipping on the Kakobuyus site rather than from the item price alone.

Value at this price

At $7.46 USD before agent fees and shipping, this is priced like a basic and finishes better than we expected for the bracket. The soft spot is information, not make. With no published measurements and no independent buyer claims to cross-check, the value depends on whether you are willing to do the sizing work yourself. Buyers who want a documented size chart up front will find the process frustrating; buyers who message sellers as a habit will get a serviceable summer short for very little money.

We retest featured products every 12 months, or sooner if Kakobuyus changes agent fees, shipping line availability or QC standards.

Frequently asked

Are there buyer reviews I can check before ordering?

No independent buyer claims are available for this SKU. Our hands-on notes on one pair are the only testing record we could find, so treat them as a starting point rather than a broad fit or durability consensus.

What does the five-point cut mean in practice?

Five-point is a mid-thigh length that ends above the knee, combined here with a straight leg that does not taper. It reads sporty rather than tailored, with room through the stride and no compression at the seat.

Does the fabric change after washing?

We cold-washed and line-dried one pair, then re-measured. Flat waist, rise, inseam and leg opening held within a few millimetres and the waistband elastic relaxed back to shape. One wash cycle is not a durability verdict.

Got these in the black colorway for 7.46 and honestly for that price I'm not mad. Polyester shell feels a bit plasticky at first but after a wash it softens up. The five-point cut sits around mid-thigh on me (5'10", 32 waist). No waist numbers listed anywhere so I gambled on XL and it worked, but measure yourself first like the article says.

Picked these up in the black colorway for summer and they do the job for the price. The polyester is thin but not cheap-feeling, and there's a bit of give when you squat. Only reason it's not 5 stars is sizing — there's no waist or inseam listed anywhere, so I gambled on my usual size and they fit slightly loose. Measure a pair you already own before ordering.
