Bape Graphic Print Black T-Shirt Review: 268 g of Cotton and a Graphic That Needs Babysitting
We ordered this $19.70 heat-transfer tee through the Kakobuyus agent, measured it flat, and washed it cold inside out. The cotton passed; the print is the part you have to protect.

At $19.70 — marked down from $22.46 — this Bape-badged graphic tee is priced like a fast-fashion basic, so our testing team treated it like one: we ordered a size L through the Kakobuyus agent, logged the parcel, laid it flat on the bench, and put a tape measure to it before anyone wore it. SKU 7705005398, listed as in stock, sizes S through XXL.
What arrived, and how it is built
The parcel held one black pullover tee, crew neck, regular short sleeves, straight cut. The heat-transfer graphic sits across the chest front; the listing describes the motif as a creative, randomly assigned print, and the color list runs to dozens of black, white and multi-tone variants. Ours was a black-on-black variant, which is the hardest version to judge: the print only reads clearly under direct light, which is exactly why we unpacked the light box.
Seams are single-needle at the hem and double at the shoulder, with taped neck seam inside the collar. Stitch density is even, no skipped stitches, no loose thread tails. The collar ribbing is thin — noticeably thinner than what we would expect on a heavyweight tee — and it relaxed visibly during the wear test. The knit has a smooth, slightly slick hand-feel rather than the drier, rougher cotton older Bape tees are remembered for; that matches buyer commentary that recent fabric feels closer to a synthetic-blend sport tee than vintage cotton.
Our measurements, flat on the bench
The listing gives no garment measurements at all, only S–XXL labels, so we took our own. Our size L sample:
| Measurement | Out of the bag | After one cold wash, line dried |
|---|---|---|
| Pit-to-pit (flat) | 55 cm | 54 cm |
| Body length (shoulder to hem) | 71 cm | 69.5 cm |
| Shoulder width | 48 cm | 48 cm |
| Sleeve length | 21 cm | 20.5 cm |
| Weight | 268 g | — |
Two things stand out. First, 268 g lands inside the catalog's stated 250–300 g band, so the weight claim holds up. Second, the fit is genuinely roomy: 55 cm across the chest on a nominally large tee reads closer to an XL in most high-street sizing. That matches what Bape buyers report — an XL fitting quite big, an L sitting looser than expected — and it is why we would size down for anything resembling a regular fit.
The wear test and the print problem
We wore the tee for 20 hours across two days, once on its own and once under an open overshirt. The straight cut hangs cleanly and does not cling; the moisture-wicking claim is at least directionally true, since it dried faster than the plain cotton tees on the same rack after a warm walk. Sleeve hems sit mid-bicep as photographed, and the graphic stayed centred through the wear.
The print is where our confidence drops. It is a heat-transfer application, which means the ink is a film sitting on the fabric rather than dye in the yarn, and it creases sharply along the chest fold. After our single cold wash inside out, a faint line appeared along one edge of the motif. Buyer reports point the same direction: cracking within a few wears and washes.
“I wore it twice, washed it, and by the third time I wore it again, then the paint started cracking a little.” — BapeTalk forum buyer
Treat that as a caution rather than a verdict on every unit. One wash is not a durability test, and our sample has not been through enough cycles to say how this specific graphic ages. What we can say is that the garment's weak point is not the cotton stitching — it is the film.
Washing: the protocol that buyer advice supports
- Turn the tee inside out before every wash.
- Use a gentle, cold cycle with a mild detergent.
- Skip the dryer entirely; heat is cited as the main cause of shrinkage and print damage.
- Line dry in shade, print side down, then press around the graphic rather than over it.
Our own shrinkage after following that routine was modest — 1.5 cm of body length, 1 cm of chest — and the colour stayed even. The care label inside our sample printed washing symbols only, with no fibre composition line, so the "pure cotton" claim comes from the catalog description rather than the garment itself. That gap matters if you care about fabric content.
What to check on arrival
Because the brand line is the reason this tee costs more than a blank, inspect the details buyers use to judge it: the shape of the ape logo's mouth, the placement and proportions of the ® symbol on the neck tag, and the print quality of the wash label. Our tag print was slightly soft at the edges. A faint odour out of the bag has been reported by at least one buyer; ours aired out overnight and did not return.
At $19.70 with free-of-drama agent handling, the cost-per-wear maths is friendly — a dozen wears puts this near $1.60 a wear, and the cotton will outlast the graphic. Buy it as a cheap, roomy, cold-wash-only streetwear tee and it makes sense. Buy it expecting a print that shrugs off a tumble dryer and it will disappoint.
How we tested: Elena Vasquez. One unit ordered via the Kakobuyus agent in size L, logged through warehouse QC; flat measurements with the same tape used on all apparel; weight on our calibrated scale; 20 hours of wear; one cold wash inside out and line dry; print and tag inspection under the light box. Retested every 12 months.Sources and notes

Frequently asked
Does this Bape tee run true to size?
It runs large. Our size L measured 55 cm pit-to-pit and 71 cm long, and buyers report XL fitting very roomy. Size down for a regular fit; the listing gives no garment measurements, so confirm numbers with the seller.
How should I wash the heat-transfer print?
Inside out, gentle cold cycle, mild detergent, no dryer. Buyer advice and our own test agree that heat is what damages the film and shrinks the cotton. Expect around 1.5 cm of length loss on a first cold wash.
What should I inspect when it arrives?
Check the ape logo's mouth shape, the ® symbol's size and placement on the neck tag, and wash-label print quality. Our care label listed symbols only with no fibre composition, and we aired the tee overnight to clear a faint bag odour.
